Late Dharamveer Dr. Balkrishna Shivram Moonje; our Founder Father, was a well-known thinker and visionary. During pre-independence days of British rule, he realized the importance of Indianising of the Armed forces and hence the necessity of providing professional military training to Indian youth.
He thus established the Central Hindu Military Education Society at Nashik in 1935. The foundation stone of the first institute of this society; Bhonsala Military School, Nashik was laid by His Excellency, Sir Roger Lumely, the then Governor of Bombay State.
H. H. Shrimanta Jivajirao Scindia – Maharaja of the erstwhile State of Gwalior inaugurated the school on 12 June 1937. In his inaugural speech; the Maharaja stated - “It is not a mere coincidence that within a short period of opening of a first rate public school, we are here today to open a first rate military school of India” The legacy of Bhonsala Military School thus came into being which to date has provided a rich crop of top military leadership viz Lt Gen (Dr) M L Chibber, Padma Bhushan, PVSM, AVSM, Lt Gen S C Sardeshpande, PVSM AVSM and Air Marshal Ajit Bhonsale, AVSM, VSM to name a few.
As on date, the school is recognised as the focal point of military education and is regarded as one of the premier residential school of India.
