‘Bail Pola’ was celebrated on 2nd Sept 2024 with religious fervour. It is a carnival for farmers to offer their gratitude to bullocks, who drive their ploughs so that farmers can sow seeds and earns a living. It is enthusiastically celebrated in states of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

To provide a first hand experience of this age old tradition, a bull was worshipped during the morning assembly by Head Master Mr Ajay Shirke, Bhonsala Military School, Principal Dr J S Riar, Bhonsala Sainik School, the academic staff and all school appointments. Puran Poli was offered to the bull and ‘Dakshina’ was given to the owner as a sign of love and respect. Mrs Pallavi Kulkarni, Counsellor of the school, explained in her address that the festival of ‘Pola’ falls on the Kushapatini Amavasya in the month of Shravana and one can see million of stars in the night which gives an appearance of wheat flour being sprinkled in the sky; hence it is named as ‘Pithori Amavasya’. Pola is celebrated for two days i.e. ‘Bail Pola' and ‘Tanha Pola’. She further gave a mythological reference that when Lord Krishna was a child, his maternal uncle Kansa sent a demon named ‘Polasur’ to kill him. However, using his divine power, Lord Krishna killed the demon.

On this day, farmers decorate their bulls with jewellery and shawls. They paint the horns of the bulls, put colourful ornaments and adorn them with garlands and flowers. A peasant’s family worships the bull and feed delicious meal of mixed vegetable cooked together, she said. She urged Ramdandees to show gratitude towards bulls, because gratitude gives us prosperity and brings happiness in our life.
