Dussehara word is derived from the word Dus means ten and Hara means defeat, symbolizing the slaying of ten headed demon King Ravana by Lord Rama. It is a festival to commemorate Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana by rescuing his abducted wife and symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

On this day, Pandavas kept all their weapons hidden in a Shami tree, when they were in ‘Agyaatavaas’ in the Kingdom of Virata and they took back their weapons on Vijayadashmi day, worshipping the Shami tree. People consider this tree as sacred tree and exchange leaves of Shami tree on the day of Dussehara. This festival gives the message to the people to live in harmony.
